Accidents happen. Whether it’s a minor fender-bender or something more serious, the persons involved often experience shock and disorientation immediately after a car accident. Amid the confusion, it’s easy to forget what to do to and what information to gather at the scene.

Here are seven things to do right after an accident to make sure you have the information you need to follow up with your insurance company and your attorney. Keep this list in your glove compartment or wallet, and make sure the other drivers in your family have a copy as well.

What To Do After A Car Accident

  1. Stay calm, take a deep breath, and regain composure.
  2. Check in with your body and note anything that hurts or aches.
  3. Check with other people in the vehicle.
  4. Call the police and remain at the scene until help arrives.
  5. Exchange information with the other parties including, but not limited to, name, address, telephone number, insurance and registration information, license plate information, driver’s license information, etc.
  6. Gather evidence. Take photos and get contact information from witnesses at the scene.
  7. Contact a lawyer when you are able.

We hope you are never involved in a serious automobile accident, or even a minor one. But if you are, this list will help you navigate through the process of collecting the information you will need to move forward.
